  • On average, a certain drug dose works. However, key liver enzymes including CYP2C19, CYP2D6, CYP2C9 & CYP3A5 often determine whether a certain drug is the right drug and whether the average dose is the right dose for you.
  • Activation to the usable form of the drug may be required. If you are unable to activate a particular drug you will not benefit from taking it. This happens when an inactive form of an enzyme has been inherited, or the gene encoding the enzyme is missing. You may benefit by switching to another drug, or increasing the drug dose.
  • Overdose: Drugs need to be metabolized and excreted in order to avoid dangerously high levels. If you cannot metabolize a drug at the normal rate you may be at high risk for adverse drug events.
  • Underdose: The opposite situation can also occur when a very active form of an enzyme has been inherited. The average dose amounts to a very low dose, insufficient to treat the disease.
